Swimmer’s ear is a common discomfort faced by kids, who love to be in water for long and also those who have started learning their swimming lessons. Kids complain severe pain and irritation inside their ear, after being in water for long. Sometimes, children may also feel a little feverish due to infection, which is usually caused when water gets inside the ear canal.
However, the problem can easily be avoided with a little care, before you put your child into water. The best way to avoid the problem is to close the entry of the ear canals, so that water cannot get inside. You can easily do it with a swimming cap, which cover the outer ear along with your kid’s head. While buying a swimming cap ensure that it exactly fits into the head of your little one. If the cap is tightly fitted then water cannot seep inside his ears causing infection. You may also use earplugs to close ear canals and stop water from entering, but make sure to take out earplugs safely, soon after your kid comes out of water.
If, after all these precautions, little amount of water seeps into the ear canal and he/she feels uneasy then you need to check properly. Mostly these drops of water may drain out of its own, when you tip your kids head aside. Sometimes few drops of water get stuck inside, causing discomfort. In this case, you may gently use cotton swabs to soak the droplets and relieve your child from the irritation. Hair dryer is also a very good option to dry out the water droplets. While using hair dryer, ensure that you use it in low temperature and also at a safe and suitable distance from the ear.
In case, water droplets are deep inside your kid’s ear canal, then you should not try to do it by yourself. You must immediately take your little one to physician, who is the right person and help you treat the condition in proper way. Your doctor might suggest using alcoholic ear drops to dry out excess water and also prevent infection. However, if the problem still persists, then probably your doctor might suggest some antibiotics, to control the pain and irritation.
